  • COMMENTARY: Responsible Growth for Lamoine by Mark Harris

On the evening of March 18, 2020, Lamoine residents were presented with the Town of Lamoine 2020 Comprehensive Plan. From their first meeting in September of 2014, a hardworking committee of town residents had dedicated countless hours conducting interviews, compiling data and analyzing surveys to create the new Lamoine Comprehensive Plan, which was warmly received and approved by the voters of Lamoine. <<Click to read more>>

  • COMMENTARY: Luxury glamping in Lamoine: Good Business or Boondoggle? by Kevin Strange

Lamoine could benefit from well-thought-out, year-round sustainable businesses that are consistent with the town’s resources and character. Arizona-based CPEX, LLC, which operates Clear Sky Resorts (CSR), is proposing to build a large-scale glamping resort on Lamoine’s sensitive coastal wetlands. The glampground will have 90 luxury domes, staff housing, a laundry facility, restaurant, swimming pool, spa and wedding venue. Glampers will pay $395 to $595 a night for accommodations. <<Click to read more>>

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Step Up to Protect Lamoine by Nicole Cardano

Dear Lamoine voters and community: I live year-round in Lamoine with my family, and work in our local schools. I was born and raised in Maine and moved to the town of Lamoine from Mount Desert Island, where I continue to raise my child. I grew up here because my parents honeymooned here and never left. <<Click to read more>>

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Lamoine Residents Speak Out by Mark Harris

On the evening of Monday, June 6, the Lamoine Consolidated School gymnasium was overflowing with residents when the Lamoine Planning Board called to order its public hearing on the proposed Clear Sky Acadia Glamping Resort. Clear Sky presented information about their plan to build 90 individual domes with standard hotel-like amenities on 228 acres off Partridge Cove Road opposite Misty Lane. In addition to the 90 guest domes, Clear Sky intends to build a reception center, a restaurant and banquet hall open to the public, a pool and spa, a maintenance and laundry facility, and housing for their resident staff. <<Click to read more>>

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Protect Lamoine by Cece Ohmart

As a Lamoine resident and taxpayer, I feel the need to express my thoughts regarding the proposed Clear Sky Acadia glamping resort. My understanding is that this will be constructed in a rural/agricultural zone and on wetlands. I understand that the Planning Board is/may interpret the “limited commercial activity” verbiage in the zoning ordinance to allow this commercialization of this area of Lamoine. While interpretation is certainly open, my interpretation of this would include small farm-based enterprises such as farm stands for vegetables or selling cheese, not a full-blown, large resort that could house over 400 people as well as employees of the resort along with a restaurant and a wedding venue. <<Click to read more>>

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Jumping the Gun by Amy Morley

In the article “Public hearing on Lamoine dome glamping resort set,” we learned that at the May Planning Board (PB) meeting the Clear Sky Acadia application was deemed complete with conditions, including approval of the project by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection, which “will need to be obtained before local construction permits are issued.” <<Click to read more>>

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Too early for glampground hearing by Mark Harris

The front-page article in the May 25 issue of The Ellsworth American regarding the Lamoine glamping resort reported that the Lamoine Planning Board found the application complete with several conditions. One of those conditions required approval of the project by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP) before construction permits can be approved. The article also stated the Planning Board will hold a public hearing on the project on Monday, June 5. <<Click to read more>>

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Profits Over Peacefulness by Mark A. Tripp

As a resident of the Partridge Cove Road in Lamoine, I read with concern and some incredulity your article about the proposed glamping resort being proposed for development just two driveways down the way from my home. According to your report, the developers of this mega tourist attraction have obtained an opinion that it's “conservatively estimated” (according to their application) that 618 individual trips in or out of the access road will not make any appreciable impact on local traffic in this otherwise quiet neighborhood. I’d find this assertion laughable if it wasn’t deliberately misleading and self-serving. <<Click to read more>>

  • LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Lamoine Facing Water Woes by Kate Munno

A major concern I have of this development ["Public hearing on Lamoine dome glamping resort set," May 25] is with water usage by Clear Sky. There is no municipal water supply to this area, and I’m assuming Clear Sky would install wells to pump water. <<Click to read more>>
